The development of our children’s English skills is a key priority at Binfield C.E. Primary School (VA). Since language is the means by which we communicate with others, we believe that achieving proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing is a vital part of a pupil’s education. Because English skills form a part of almost every lesson, we recognise that effective English teaching is imperative to ensuring children’s capability to succeed throughout the whole curriculum. Consequently, we believe that it is very important that our children are given opportunities to further all forms of communication and expression.
We believe that it is vital for children to be actively involved in their English lessons. We aim to excite our children’s imaginations and for them to become fully immersed in their learning. We make use of a full range of resources to enable us to do this, for example, using a range of written texts, visual images, short film clips, the Binfield Outdoor Learning Environment (B.O.L.E.) or real experiences to make this happen. Children will also learn about how language works. Using this understanding pupils learn, over time, to write in different styles for different situations and audiences. Pupils are helped to develop the ability to communicate their ideas and thoughts through the written word, which includes developing their understanding of spelling patterns, sentence structure, organising ideas and vocabulary.
We believe that it is important to instil within our children a love of reading. Time is set aside each day to focus on reading skills. In Reception and Key Stage 1, the children follow a daily systematic phonics programme, Read Write Inc, to support them with their Reading, Writing, Grammar and Spelling. A Parent Information Session is held at the beginning of the academic year to let them know more about Read Write Inc. In Reception, pupils are taught the beginning of our continuous cursive handwriting scheme by linking the letter sounds to their letters, using ‘lead ins’ for each letter. They are also given lots of opportunity to practice mark making skills by drawing lines, circles and zig-zags of various sizes in a range of mediums, including with chalk, paint, foam and sand.
By the end of Year 1, pupils should be joining their letters in the continuous cursive style. Pupils in Year 1 practice spellings though the Read Write Inc Phonics programme. Pupils in Years 2 to 6 learn their spellings through the Read Write Inc Spelling programme, which is taught for 15 minutes each day. The children are taught a new spelling rule each week, and are given lots of opportunities to practice spelling it. In addition, children in Years 1-6 are given a list of commonly mis-spelt words each half term which they are expected to learn over the course of the term.
We encourage our children to take books home and share them with others. Each class has a library which contains a wide collection of good quality stories, plays and poems. The children, with guidance from their teacher or teaching assistant, are able to select their own books and use these for home reading. They are also encouraged to keep a Reading Log where they record their reflections on what they have read.
